LadyLab's Goals
LadyLab's Goals
"Success is not only a destination; it's a carefully charted course, defined before the journey begins."
"Success is not only a destination; it's a carefully charted course, defined before the journey begins."
Create the Future
LadyLab was an unprecedented concept, necessitating innovative thinking in every aspect, from design and operations to development, right from the ground level.
Create a Healthy Addiction to Accomplishing Goals
The purpose of LadyLab is to connect like-minded entrepreneurs to accomplish their projects with excellence.
Create a Revenue Stream for Users & Founders
LadyLab would be launched as a freemium app, requiring in-app purchase to unlock powerful functionality.
Connect Entrepreneurs
The target user profiles were clearly identified, and the design needed to be crafted like an ideal harpoon to captivate interests and quickly achieve overnight success.
Attract Investors
As a founder-funded seed-round startup, LadyLab recognized the need for its initial app version to be robust and enticing to draw in future investors.
Consulting the Founder, Investor Pitch Decks, and Potential users
Understanding what is known is imparative to avoiding unnesary rework. Over a period of two days, Cerebral held (21) 1-on-1 interviews with internal stakeholders, from the CEO to Content Associates.
Wireframing Key Interactions
Given the sheer size of the undertaking, every step of the UX was wire-framed, prototyped, and aligned with all parties prior to moving to design.
A Process of Discovery
Aligning to a founder's goals is imperative to a successful go-to-market strategy. Over a period of several weeks, Cerebral & LadyLab's founder met to share insights on the vision, assets, and much more.

Designs
Let's take a look at just a few screens of the iOS app LadyLab, as presented in the iOS app store.
Elaboration Theory
Overconfidence Effect
Restorff Effect
This effect highlights a bias where subjective confidence exceeds actual accuracy in judgments. In LadyLab, user busyness could delay pitch responses. To maintain user confidence during these waits, LadyLab strategically used copy to manage expectations during interactions.
Regret Aversion
Also known as the isolation effect, this implies unique items stand out. LadyLab applied this by varying upsell presentations to ensure users notice and don't subconsciously dismiss them.
This is a social theory that proposes two primary routes to persuading engagement: the central route (connect for a project) and the peripheral route (connecting in general). Each route offers differing levels of user investment, thus increasing the likelihood of connecting users - the fundamental Hooked Model of LadyLab.
Psychology Principles
Psychology Principles
This principle addresses the fear of regret from wrong decisions. For LadyLab, it involved the hesitation to interact with peers or start conversations. By using confirmation messages at key moments, LadyLab boosted user engagement.

Structure
Create 2x separate prototypes, Mobile & Desktop, and administer to a statistically significant set of users for a qualitative usability test. Propose multiple tasks for each user, with zero bias, each task allowing Cerebral to analyze unbiased opinions & interactions with the prototype. Gather insight to resolve hypothesis and iterate as needed to achieve designed goal/s.
Design is only a piece to the puzzle; it's critical that usability testing with real users forge those designs into outcome-driven masterpieces.
Usability Testing
Methodology
Testing with 5-6 users per prototype, a practice supported by industry authority NN/g, typically covers around 80% of users' pain points and preferences. Tackling the remaining 20% often demands significant time and resources, with teams relying on intuition to navigate this remaining segment.

Regret Aversion
Also known as the isolation effect, this theory predicts that when multiple similar objects are present, the one that differs from the rest is more likely to be remembered. In LadyLab's case, as well as many apps, the goal was to upsell users to a premium subscription. Given there were many areas to promote an upsell, it was important that these upsells were presented differently each time in order to avoid the user subconsciously closing such upsells.

Psychology Principles
Psychology Principles
This principle focuses on the emotional fear of making a decision that might be the wrong choice, leading to feelings of regret in the future. In LadyLab's case, this was the potential lack of interaction with fitting peers, as well as backing out of conversation-starting actions such as starting a pitch but retracting out of fear. By carefully placing confirmation messages during these pivotal moments, LadyLab encouraged the outreach between it's users.

This effect details a well-established bias in which a person's subjective confidence in her judgments is reliably greater than the objective accuracy of those judgments. In LadyLab's case, pitches between peers can go unnoticed for some time due to the busy schedule of it's accomplished users. It was important for LadyLab's success that this time period would not decrease the user's confidence in their interaction with the app, so copy was used carefully to set expectations throughout interactions.
